Ho Chi Minh City in 5 Days: War History, Markets & the Mekong Delta
A district-by-district HCMC itinerary that moves through the city’s layers chronologically — from the French colonial boulevards of District 1 and the wartime history of the Cu Chi Tunnels, to the all-night chaos of Ben Thanh market and a full day on the Mekong river network south of the city. Grab fares and dong prices verified June 2026.

🛂Vietnam e-visa required for most nationalities: Apply online at evisa.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn ($25 USD, 90-day single-entry). Processing takes 3 business days. A growing number of nationalities receive visa-free entry (45–90 days) — check the official portal for your specific passport before booking. Policy updates frequently.
📷Bag snatching warning: Motorbike bag-snatching is a real and documented risk in HCMC, particularly in District 1 and near Ben Thanh Market. Keep bags on your shoulder facing away from the road, never dangle a phone strap loosely, and avoid using your phone on the pavement near the curb. Cross-body bags worn across the chest significantly reduce risk. The issue is well-managed in tourist areas but not eliminated.
📱
Grab is essential in HCMC
Grab (GrabCar and GrabBike) is the most reliable transport option in Ho Chi Minh City — fixed prices shown before booking, no negotiation required. GrabBike is faster in District 1–3 traffic for 1–2 people. For metered taxis, use only Vinasun (white, 38 38 38) or Mai Linh (green, 38 38 38 38) — both have tamper-evident meters. Avoid unmarked or tourist-facing taxis outside airports and tourist sites.

Arrival
🛣
Tan Son Nhat Airport (SGN) → District 1
Tan Son Nhat is 8 km from the District 1 hotel corridor. Grab Car to central District 1: ₫80,000–130,000, 25–40 minutes depending on traffic. Official metered taxis: Vinasun (white) or Mai Linh (green) at the arrivals rank — confirm the meter is running before moving. The Airport Express Bus 109 runs to Ben Thanh Market (₫20,000, 45–60 minutes) — the budget option, slower but reliable.
Buy a Viettel SIM at the arrivals hall (10 GB / 7 days from ₫100,000). The SIM is required for Grab — without a local number the app will not complete bookings.

🏛
District 1 Colonial Walk: Notre-Dame, Central Post Office & City Hall
HCMC’s French colonial core is concentrated within a 10-minute walk of Dong Khoi Street. The three anchor landmarks: Notre-Dame Cathedral (Bã o Tàng Chứng Tích Chiến Tranh, 4.5/5 from 40,000+ Google Maps reviews — currently under restoration, exterior viewing only); Saigon Central Post Office (4.5/5 from 55,000+ reviews — designed by Gustave Eiffel’s firm in 1891, still operational, free entry); Ho Chi Minh City Hall (People’s Committee Building, exterior only). The Dong Khoi walking street connects all three in under 20 minutes.
The Central Post Office interior is one of HCMC’s most photographed spaces — the vaulted iron ceiling and vintage map murals. Enter from the Dong Khoi side. The working post counters still sell stamps and postcard services (₫15,000 per postcard internationally).

Ben Thanh Market Day & Night Sections
Ben Thanh is HCMC’s most central market — the covered day market (open 06:00–18:00) sells clothing, lacquerware and dried goods; the surrounding pedestrian night market (18:00–24:00) extends the block with 100+ open-air food stalls. Rated 4.3/5 from 75,000+ Google Maps reviews. Daytime prices are quoted high for tourists; negotiate to 50–60% of asking. Night market food: bánh xèo (sizzling crepe) ₫60,000, bún bò huế (Hue-style noodle soup) ₫55,000, fresh coconut ₫30,000.
The night market stalls along Phan Chu Trinh and Thu Khoa Huan streets directly north of Ben Thanh have the best food-to-price ratio and less aggressive vendor attention than the market interior. Walk the full circuit before choosing where to eat.

War Remnants Museum
The most visited museum in Vietnam and one of the most reviewed in Southeast Asia — rated 4.6/5 from 58,000+ Google Maps reviews. Documents the Vietnam War through photographs, military equipment and personal testimonies, with a focus on civilian impact. The third floor Agent Orange exhibition is the most affecting section. Entry: ₫40,000. Open daily 07:30–18:00, 245 Vo Van Tan, District 3. Allow 2–2.5 hours. The museum does not offer a sanitised account — the content is graphic and historically significant.
Visit in the morning before the heat peaks and before the tour groups arrive (10:30 onward). The outdoor yard contains US military aircraft, tanks and artillery pieces — the Huey helicopters and the F-5 jets are among the most photographed exhibits. Audio guide available in English (₫30,000).

🏛
Reunification Palace (Independence Palace)
The former Presidential Palace of South Vietnam — on April 30, 1975, a North Vietnamese tank crashed through the gates here, ending the war. The palace has been preserved exactly as it was on that day: the war rooms, the presidential suites, the rooftop helipad and the underground command bunker remain intact and open to visitors. Rated 4.4/5 from 42,000+ Google Maps reviews. Entry: ₫40,000. Open daily 07:30–11:00 and 13:00–16:00. Guided tours in English at 09:00, 10:00, 14:00 and 15:00 (included in entry).
The basement level — telecommunications centre, map rooms and sleeping quarters — is the most historically atmospheric part of the palace and often overlooked by visitors who focus on the main floors. Allow 45 minutes for the underground sections alone.
🌄
20:00 – 23:00
🌄
Bui Vien Walking Street — HCMC’s Backpacker District After Dark
Bui Vien Street (District 1) is HCMC’s highest-density night entertainment strip — 400 metres of bars, street food stalls, live music and outdoor seating that operates nightly from 18:00 until 02:00. Rated 4.1/5 from 35,000+ Google Maps reviews. Beer: ₫20,000–40,000 (Saigon or Tiger). Street food: oysters ₫15,000 each, grilled squid ₫50,000–80,000, fresh spring rolls ₫30,000. The street is pedestrianised from 18:00 on weekends. Loud, chaotic and genuinely vivid — worth one evening regardless of traveller type.
The parallel street Bui Thi Xuan (one block north) has the same atmosphere at lower prices and fewer tourist-facing vendors — useful if Bui Vien feels too congested. Keep bags on your chest in the crowds.

Cu Chi Tunnels Day Trip
75 km northwest · Half-day or full-day tour · Early departure recommended
⛰ Cu ChiDay Trip
🚌
07:30 – 14:00
⛰
Cu Chi Tunnels — Ben Dinh or Ben Duoc Site
The Cu Chi tunnel network — 250 km of underground passages used by Viet Cong fighters during the war — is the most visited day-trip destination from HCMC. Ben Dinh (closer, 40 km, more tourist-adapted, most tours use this site) and Ben Duoc (75 km, less crowded, larger complex, more authentic atmosphere) are the two main sites. Rated 4.4/5 from 42,000+ Google Maps reviews (Ben Dinh). Entry: ₫120,000. Visitors can crawl through widened tunnel sections (the original passages are 80 cm wide and 80 cm high), inspect booby-trap demonstrations and see authentic wartime equipment in situ.
Getting there: guided minibus tours from District 1 hotels (₫200,000–350,000/person including entry and guide, depart 07:30–08:00, return by 13:00–14:00) are the simplest option. Independent option: Grab to Ben Thanh Bus Station, then public bus 13 to Cu Chi town (₫20,000, 2 hours), then xe om to the tunnels (₫30,000). The guided option is better value when time is factored in.
The tunnel crawl sections are very tight and very dark — those with claustrophobia should note that the experience involves 20–100 metre underground passages with low ceilings and restricted ventilation. All sections have an exit point that can be used to opt out.

15:00 – 18:00
🍕
Afternoon: District 1 Street Food Recovery
After returning from Cu Chi, the Nguyen Trai food corridor in District 5 or the street food cluster on Vinh Khanh (District 4, known as “the seafood street”) are the two most reviewed evening food destinations accessible by short Grab from District 1. Vinh Khanh (4.4/5 from 8,000+ reviews) has the best concentration of grilled seafood stalls at local prices: whole grilled prawn ₫40,000, grilled clams with butter ₫60,000/portion, fresh beer ₫15,000.
Vinh Khanh is a working-class neighbourhood food street rather than a tourist destination — most stalls have no English menus but point-and-order works well. GrabBike from District 1 is ₫20,000–35,000 and 10–15 minutes.
Day4
Mekong Delta Day Trip — My Tho & Ben Tre
70 km south · Full day tour · Boat, bicycle & coconut candy factory
⛵ MekongDay Trip
⛵
07:00 – 18:00
⛵
Mekong Delta: My Tho, Boat Ride & Ben Tre Island
The Mekong Delta begins 70 km south of HCMC — a dense network of river channels, floating markets, coconut palm islands and stilt-house villages. Day tours from HCMC cover the My Tho river network and the coconut island of Ben Tre: motorised wooden boat through narrow water channels, visit to a coconut candy and honey bee farm, traditional rowing boat through water hyacinth canals, lunch of river fish (ca kho to, elephant ear fish) at a riverside restaurant, and optional bicycle ride through Ben Tre villages. Rated 4.3/5 from 25,000+ Google Maps reviews.
Tour options: budget minibus tours (₫350,000–500,000/person, pickup 07:00–07:30, return 17:30–18:00) from Ben Thanh area are the standard option. Most-reviewed operators: Mekong Eyes, Trails of Indochina and Les Rives Experience — the last two offer smaller group sizes (max 8–12) at higher price points (from $40–70/person).
The floating market at Cai Be (an extension of standard tours, ₫100,000–150,000 extra) is most active at 05:00–07:00 — arriving by 08:00 on a day tour still catches some activity but the peak atmosphere requires an earlier start. Some operators offer combined Mekong overnight tours (2D/1N) that include the early morning market — worth considering if this is a priority.

Cho Lon — HCMC’s Chinatown (District 5)
Cho Lon is Southeast Asia’s largest Chinatown — a dense commercial district of wholesale goods, Chinese temples and traditional pharmacies 4 km west of District 1. The main draws: Binh Tay Market (4.4/5 from 18,000+ reviews — a cavernous 1928 French-built market hall selling wholesale goods, spices and household items; entry free); Thien Hau Temple (4.6/5 from 14,000+ reviews — a 19th-century Cantonese temple with constantly burning incense coils hanging from the ceiling; entry free); Giac Lam Pagoda (4.6/5 from 8,000+ reviews — HCMC’s oldest pagoda, 1744, with a garden of memorial stupas).
The incense coils hanging in Thien Hau Temple are among the most photographed interiors in HCMC — photography is permitted and the light in the morning (09:00–10:30) is best. GrabBike from District 1 to Binh Tay Market: ₫25,000–40,000, 15–20 minutes.
☕
13:30 – 16:00
☕
District 3 Cafe Neighbourhood Walk
District 3 — immediately north of District 1 — is HCMC’s most architecturally coherent neighbourhood: French colonial villas converted into cafes, tree-lined boulevards and low-rise streetscapes unchanged since the 1960s. The Vo Thi Sau and Tran Quy Cap corridor has HCMC’s highest concentration of high-rated independent cafes. Most reviewed: The Workshop (4.5/5 from 6,400+ reviews, specialty coffee ₫55,000–85,000), Cong Ca Phe (4.4/5 from 8,000+ reviews, coconut coffee ₫45,000), and Cafe Zoom (4.4/5 from 3,800+ reviews, Vietnamese filter coffee with condensed milk ₫25,000).
The Workshop on Ngo Duc Ke (District 1, 6th floor) is a popular last-afternoon stop for single-origin Vietnamese coffee with city views — also good for remote workers needing WiFi before departure. No time limit on seating.
🏙
18:00 – 21:00
🏙
HCMC Rooftop Bars — Farewell Sundowner
HCMC has a well-developed rooftop bar scene centred on District 1 towers. Most reviewed options by verified visitors: Chill Skybar at AB Tower (4.4/5 from 18,000+ reviews, 26th floor, cocktails ₫180,000–320,000, no dress code, no minimum); Saigon Saigon Bar at Caravelle Hotel (4.4/5 from 8,500+ reviews, 9th floor, outdoor terrace, historically significant — where foreign journalists reported during the war years); EON Heli Bar at Bitexco Tower (4.3/5 from 12,000+ reviews, 52nd floor, ₫250,000–450,000 cocktails, city panorama in all directions).
Chill Skybar has no entrance fee and no minimum spend — the most accessible option. Bitexco’s EON Heli Bar requires a lift ticket (₫200,000) redeemable against food/drinks. For the best value-per-view ratio, Chill Skybar on a clear evening is the recommended choice.
Full Transport Guide
HCMC has no metro system (the first metro line opened in late 2024 but covers limited routes). Grab and metered taxis handle all in-city transport. Bus services exist but require local knowledge of routes.
🚕 Ho Chi Minh City Transport Options
Grab covers 95% of visitor needs. The remaining 5% is day-trip minibus transfers. Metered taxis are a reliable backup when Grab is unavailable.

Cash & Cards in HCMC
Vietnam is primarily cash-based. ATMs (Vietcombank and Techcombank are most reliable) charge ₫30,000–55,000 per foreign withdrawal — withdraw larger amounts (₫2,000,000–5,000,000) to minimise fee frequency. Authorised bank exchange counters offer better rates than airport kiosks. Mid-range restaurants and all hotels accept credit cards but apply 2–3% surcharges. Street food, markets and tuk-tuks require cash.
