Bangkok BTS vs. MRT vs. River Boat:
Which Should You Use?

We cross-referenced 2026 official fare data from BTSC, MRTA and the Chao Phraya Express Boat Co., plus 3,200+ verified traveller reviews, to build one decision-ready table. No opinions — just the numbers, and an area-by-area recommendation at the end.

Bottom line: For most tourists, the BTS Skytrain covers the highest concentration of major attractions at the lowest hassle — buy a Rabbit Card on arrival. The MRT fills the gaps in Chinatown, Chatuchak and the Silom-Lumphini corridor. The River Boat (Orange Flag) is the cheapest and most scenic way to reach the Grand Palace and Chinatown — ฿15 flat. No single system wins everywhere; the area-by-area guide below tells you exactly which to take from each neighbourhood.

Which Line to Take: Area by Area

Bangkok's three systems serve different parts of the city with almost no overlap. This section tells you the fastest, cheapest option from each major tourist area — no route map required.

💡 Buy a stored-value card on arrival — skip the ticket machine queue every trip Rabbit Card (BTS): ฿100 deposit + ฿50 starter credit, available at any BTS station. MRT Card: ฿30 deposit + ฿150 credit, available at any MRT station. Both tap-in automatically and charge per trip — no daily limit needed for most visits.
🛕
Grand Palace / Rattanakosin
Historic Old City · Temples
🚢 River Boat
Neither BTS nor MRT reaches here. Take the Orange Flag Chao Phraya Express from Sathorn/Central Pier (N1) to Tha Chang Pier (N9) — ฿15 flat, ~20 min. Ignore the "Tourist Boat" touts at Sathorn Pier; the local Orange Flag boat runs the same route for a fraction of the price.
🏙️
Sukhumvit (Asok → Ekkamai)
Hotels · Nightlife · Malls
🚆 BTS Skytrain
BTS runs the full Sukhumvit line end-to-end every 5–7 min at peak. Asok station has a direct underground walkway to MRT Sukhumvit for quick transfers. Most mid-range tourist hotels in this corridor are within 5 min walk of a BTS station.
🛍️
Siam / CentralWorld / MBK
Shopping District · City Centre
🚆 BTS Skytrain
Siam station is the BTS interchange where Sukhumvit and Silom lines meet — the most connected station in the city. Walk to MBK via covered sky bridge, no taxi needed. Almost every tourist attraction in central Bangkok is ≤3 stops from Siam.
🍜
Chinatown (Yaowarat)
Street Food · Night Market
🚇 MRT
MRT Hua Lamphong (Blue Line) or Sam Yot station puts you a 10-min walk from Yaowarat Road. River Boat to Ratchawong Pier (N5) works well for daytime. At night, MRT is faster and safer than a taxi stuck in Chinatown traffic.
🌙
Silom / Sathorn (Rooftop Bars)
Business District · Nightlife
🚆 BTS Skytrain
BTS Sala Daeng (Silom line) is the centre of the district. Sathorn/Central Pier is the main River Boat hub for daytime access from upriver. BTS last service is ~00:00 — check the last-train time before a late night out.
🛒
Chatuchak Weekend Market
North Bangkok · Weekend Only
BTS or MRT
BTS Mo Chit and MRT Chatuchak Park stations are adjacent — take whichever your route connects to. Both serve the market equally well. The MRT Kamphaeng Phet exit drops you closest to the weekend market's main entrance.
✈️
Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK)
International Arrivals · Departures
Airport Rail Link
The Airport Rail Link (SRTET — separate operator, not MRT) runs to Phaya Thai (BTS interchange) and Makkasan. ฿45 flat, 26 min. The MRT Blue Line does NOT reach Suvarnabhumi. Taxi in peak traffic takes 45–90+ min and costs ฿200–400 plus expressway tolls.
🌊
Nonthaburi / River Suburbs
Day Trip · Koh Kret
🚢 River Boat
MRT Purple Line reaches Nonthaburi, but the Chao Phraya Orange Flag boat is the classic way north — and you get to watch the city transform into river suburbs along the way. ฿15 to the last stop. For Koh Kret, take a local ferry from Pak Kret Pier.

Passes & Cards: Are They Worth It?

Bangkok's transit zones are compact enough that most tourists won't break even on a day pass. Here is the honest comparison.

⚠️ The BTS One-Day Pass (฿150) breaks even at 5+ BTS trips on the same day A typical tourist day — hotel → attraction → lunch → attraction → dinner → hotel — uses 5–6 trips. The pass is worth it only if all destinations are on BTS. If your route mixes MRT or River Boat, individual fares on a stored-value card are usually cheaper overall.

BTS One-Day Pass

Chao Phraya Tourist Boat Pass
Blue Flag tourist boat · All-day
฿200 13+ trips — extremely unlikely Skip It
River Boat per trip (Orange Flag)
Local express · Pay on board
฿15 flat Always cheapest river option Best Value
💡 Which boat flag should you take? The Chao Phraya Express Boat runs four flag colours. Orange Flag (no flag, local service): ฿15 flat, stops at all piers — best value, used by locals. Yellow Flag: express, skips some piers, ฿20–29. Blue Flag: tourist boat, ฿60 per trip or ฿200 all-day — the same route as Orange Flag but at 4× the price. Ignore the "Tourist Boat" sales pitch at Sathorn Pier and walk past to the Orange Flag queue.
